Young people in care develop new life skills

Here in the Care Venture of asphaleia we are now offering the Young People in Care the opportunity to come in to the centre on Friday’s every week to participate in, and lead a group session that will involve challenges and issues facing the Young People on their journey’s from semi-supported to independent living.

This Friday, we looked at food shopping and budgeting on a low income as requested by the Young People. We sat down and discussed the issues and difficulties of living on a budget. Everything from pooling money together in a kitty if in a shared property, to eating healthy and meal preparation. We discussed other avenue’s to explore such as budget supermarkets, shopping at local business’s and food banks in case of emergencies.

For the group exercise the boys were then split into two groups and provided the same shopping list and asked to go online at two leading supermarkets and whoever could get the lowest cost would win. This was fun, engaging and informative and interesting to see how the different boys had different approaches.

After the group session had finished and the winner’s crowned we had a drop in session. This was for the Young People to request assistance with any issues they have. From filling in application forms for jobs or college, property searches for moving on after asphaleia care or mediating phone calls to various external agencies. This  will be running every Friday in the training centre at asphaleia from 12pm-4pm.
